CubeSats): 1 a 10 kg.
Microsatélites: 10 a 100 kg. Brindan servicios rentables de teledetección e imágenes.
Mini-satélites (SmallSats): 100 a 500 kg.
Satélites Medianos: 500 a 1.000 kg.

The global satellite industry is a critical technological pillar valued at over $390 billion, projected to surpass $780 billion within the next decade. Driven by the boom in low-Earth orbit internet mega-constellations, direct-to-device connectivity, Earth observation data analytics, and defense investments, the sector is experiencing rapid strategic expansion.

Classification by Altitude (Orbit)

A satellite's altitude determines its coverage area, signal latency, and orbital speed.

Low Earth Orbit (LEO): Altitude from 160 to 2,000 km.
- Use: High-speed internet constellations (e.g., Starlink, Amazon Kuiper), Earth observation, and scientific research (e.g., International Space Station).
- Features: Fast orbital periods (90 to 120 minutes) provide high-resolution imagery but require hundreds or thousands of satellites for global coverage.

Medium Earth Orbit (MEO): Altitude from 2,000 to 35,786 km.
- Use: Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) like GPS, Galileo, and GLONASS.
- Features: Offers a balance between proximity to Earth and vast coverage areas, requiring far fewer satellites than LEO for continuous service.

Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO): Fixed altitude at 35,786 km directly above the equator.
- Use: Telecommunications, satellite TV broadcasting, and continuous weather monitoring.
- Features: Matches Earth's rotational speed, appearing "stationary" over a fixed point. It provides broad coverage but suffers from higher signal latency.

Elliptical and Polar Orbits (HEO / SSO):
- Highly Elliptical Orbit (HEO): Features variable altitude to optimize communication coverage over polar and high-latitude regions.
- Sun-Synchronous Orbit (SSO): A specialized LEO orbit where the satellite passes over any given point at the same local solar time, ideal for environmental and agricultural monitoring.

Classification by Size and Mass

While traditional satellites were massive structures, the industry has heavily shifted toward manufacturing and deploying SmallSats (small satellites).

Picosatellites: Under 1 kg. Primarily used for university experiments and amateur radio messaging.
Nanosatellites (e.g., CubeSats): 1 to 10 kg. Standardized in 10 cm × 10 cm × 10 cm modular units, widely used for commercial IoT and test constellations.
Microsatellites: 10 to 100 kg. Designed for cost-effective remote sensing and imagery services.
Minisatellites: 100 to 500 kg. This fast-growing segment forms the backbone of modern low-Earth orbit commercial constellations.
Medium Satellites: 500 to 1,000 kg. Utilized for complex Earth observation and meteorological missions.
Large Satellites: Over 1,000 kg (some exceeding 6,000 kg). Typically deployed in GEO for heavy telecommunications, defense payloads, and major space telescopes.
